How do they work?
It is important to understand that fake wasp nests, such as the Wasp Decoy HD, do not repel wasps directly. Rather, they encourage wasps to establish their colony elsewhere by taking advantage of wasps’ aggressive territorial nature. Social wasps avoid building nests within 200 feet of existing colonies in order to avoid confrontations. Therefore, hanging the Wasp Decoy HD early in the spring before wasps start nesting may convince them to build farther away. If a wasp nest already exists (even in later months), knock it down and put the Wasp Decoy HD in it’s place. The Wasp Decoy HD should remain in place through late summer and fall. At that time, with no more eggs to care for, you’ll notice a lot more worker wasps present as they focus on feeding themselves sugary foods before being killed by the first winter frost. The queen wasps, which hibernate over winter, survive to start new colonies in spring. Using the Wasp Decoy HD throughout the season capitalizes on wasps’ instincts to keep them away.
Not Your Run-of-the-Mill Fake Wasp Nest
There are a ton of fake wasp nests out there, from the DIY varieties (brown paper bags, newspaper, and tape) to the ready-made brands sold online and in stores.
I have spent a lot of time and research to develop the Wasp Decoy HD to have the most realistic appearance and texture available on the market today, while also using a tough durable material that will last years in all sorts of weather conditions. They are made from a plant-based plastic material that is renewable, recyclable, and compostable. They also have a solid internal support structure for added strength. From start to finish, it takes roughly 10 hours to create a single Wasp Decoy HD.
I wanted it to appear as real as possible and spent a lot of time modeling various wasp nests to achieve this; Not the appearance of a crumbled up brown paper bag or Chinese lanterns (as I like to call them) on the market. Coming in at 5″ x 4″, I wanted to ensure the Wasp Decoy HD was large enough to mimic the size of an established colony.
This is an inside look at the Wasp Decoy HD. It’s not just an empty shell, it’s multiple layers thick and has an internal support structure for increased strength and durability.
There has been a lot of attention to the detail and realism of the Wasp Decoy HD. It has a rough rock / paper texture to it while being made from a plant-based plastic material that is renewable, recyclable, and compostable. Looking closely, you’ll notice that I’ve engineered it to keep pesky critters from moving in and setting up shop.
